This Week at the Market

May 10th-Queen Bees-MFM Celebrates Mother's Day
At the MFM on May 10, look for spring onions, potatoes, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, radishes, arugula, mesclun, spinach, fresh young lettuce and lots of strawberries. Among other foods, we’ll also have granola, honey, preserves, coffee and Black Angus beef.

This weekend, the Memphis Farmers’ Market is the place to get your garden going with a fragrant potted arrangement of herbs, a hanging basket, a colorful bouquet or some vegetable starts, perennials and annuals for your garden. Plan to visit our fresh-cut flower vendors to find a unique Mother’s Day arrangement for the mom in your life. You can’t find blooms like these anywhere else!

You can also pick up a coffeecake, a loaf of crusty bread, handmade chocolates, or another of our delicious prepared foods for Mom. Or maybe she’d like something for the kitchen or garden from one of our artisan vendors. And while you can’t bring faithful Fido into the market, you can pick up some treats for him. The MFM pretty much has it all!

What To Expect at the Market

The growing calendar in the tri-state area is seasonal. This means that early-season crops you'll find in May and early June need cool weather (warm days/cool nights). Examples of early crops at the Market are greens, lettuce, cabbage, onions and strawberries. The season starts to peak in late June and July when such crops as tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and peppers become available. Soon after you'll find sweet corn, melons, peas and late summer tomatoes. The season winds down in September, repeating the cool weather cycle of lettuces, cabbages, broccoli and radishes while fall's cooling weather brings pumpkins, gourds, pansies and mums.

This spring’s rains have relieved most of our drought conditions but have slowed the maturing of early fruits such as strawberries, which should be in good supply by the end of April. We’re glad to report that the low temperatures of mid-April do not seem to have wiped out this year’s peaches, although there was damage in low-lying areas at some orchards.
